Orange and date fruit salad sounds delicious Kathryn - I do like a bit of dried fruit with fresh for adding sweetness without sugar.

I wonder if there's just something in the phrase 'fruit salad' that smacks of joyless diet food (and horrible fruit combinations)?

Ah yes, the unripe melon, another reason to avoid bought fruit salads! Definitely try the nectarines - they add a bit of texture amid the berries. And thanks for the mint tip!

So agree with you --- out of season and unripe melon/canteloupe ruined the idea of fruit salad for me until i started sticking to berries. Will have to try it with nectarines -- also a great addition to any fruit salad is mint!!

Hi Anita,

This does keep well in the fridge - the raspberries will soften considerably but providing that the rest of the fruit isn't overripe when made it will keep happily for up to five days

I have to admit I'm personally not a fruit salad fan. There's just something about the mixture that I don't really like. Although having said that my mum makes a really simple orange and date fruit salad, which is delicious.

Anyway, despite my fruit salad aversion I completely agree with you about it being a good fruit-eating strategy. I have a number of clients who can't be bothered to eat fruit mid week, but if they can find time to make up a fruit salad on the weekend, then they happily eat away at it. It can also be a good food to have in the fridge to distract from other more energy intensive snacking options.

I share your sentiments - I am not a big fan of melon and find that so many fruit salads are packed with melon but I have started eating fruit salad more in summer. I sometimes find it is an easier way to eat the fruit - would definitely gobble up yours - I also find it a great with pineapple and passionfruit.
